Android TV has the best choice of IPTV players of any platform. That's great, but it also means a lot of near-identical apps. These are the ones we'd actually recommend, grouped by what they're good at. All of them are players only: bring your own playlist from a legitimate source.

TiviMate

OTT Navigator
Extremely configurable, with strong EPG handling, catch-up support and several guide layouts. It takes longer to learn, but if you like fine-tuning, it's excellent, and the free version is very capable.
IPTV Smarters Pro
Its big-tile layout makes movies and series easy to browse. The live TV guide is simpler than TiviMate's. Good choice if you also want the same app on phones and tablets.
Televizo
Clean and lightweight. A nice pick for a secondary TV or an older device where heavier players feel sluggish.
Kodi with PVR IPTV Simple Client
Kodi is a full media centre. Add the PVR IPTV Simple Client add-on and point it at your M3U and XMLTV, and you get live TV alongside your own movies and music. It's free and open source, but expect to spend some time on setup and skins.
Stick to Kodi's official add-on repository. Third-party "builds" and add-ons that promise free premium content are a common source of malware and unlicensed streams.
Honourable mention: VLC
VLC can open an M3U playlist and play it, which makes it handy for testing whether a stream works. It's not built for daily live TV with a guide, though.
Which one to install first
Start with TiviMate. If you find yourself wanting more control, try OTT Navigator. If a second TV feels slow, put Televizo on it. And if channels buffer in every player, the player isn't the problem, work through our buffering fixes instead.
